Social Media Personality Disorder – To be or not To be


Being a cyber frenzy professional, I am always sniffing out for some spicy meat out there that I can share and fill my gossip membrane. Ouch, woman you see! So the latest that grabbed my attention, was this online papparazzi talk flick, social media personality disorder. In an instant, from the content, I felt it’s something like a wannabe act, to consolidate some attention from web users or perhaps just an attempt to position oneself deliberately on the web world. 

Eh?

Quite practically, if we go by the straight meaning of multiple personaity disorder, it would signify duality of a persoanlity, or the various facets of a personality. Well, I wouldn’t mind confessing, even I am suffering from this syndrome on and off. Professionally I navigate through different emotions, seamlessly cruising from respect to irreverence, free spirited to straight laced, bold to being naive, and personally I can be dictative and humble in the same breath, or conservative to flamboyant without thinking much. So when I seriously mulled over the subject, I could relate to those who actually practice personality disorder tactics. 

Let me introduce you to one of these anonymous users (identity kept confidential) who has different personalities on various social media platforms for different audience and varied responses. In an attempt to diversify her appeal, she got into creating several social media profiles with random tags and various accounts. All her accounts were a part of her, yet not completely her, gathered at one place. They were different representations of  her on various social media platforms. 

On facebook, she had this profile that shouts out snazzy and a sassy image. Very pink tinge, being a lady, young and vibrant, fun loving and dedicated to stay connected with the world. She maintains this hair let down attitude and manages to accrue some interesting fans too. She plays this diva on Facebook.
Her LinkedIn personality has more of a professional appeal and someone with smarts, skills and an attitude that knows her business well. Her PR and business strategies are well maintained and accurately polished. This helps in leaving an impact on her connections and probable clients as well.
On the other hand, her twitter personality is well updated of the comments, news, trends and latest tweets. 

She is free, confident, talkative, effusive and fearless to live like a cyber nerd or addict. She is a big part of the Web Wide World. She is indeed a success story on the social media platform. 

This convinced me enough that multiple personalities aren’t quite a sin, until they go really messy and spread around filth on the online galaxy. 

However, there are also people who go brutally wrong with managing multiple personality fashion. They are usually the ones who fail to understand why their head spinned of the several profiles that they plunged into making. Eventually they turn out to be worst turn offs on the social web. Some of the social miscreants are those who keep flaunting about even the smallest achievement like they bought a parrot green car just to promote environmental concerns. Or even retweeting compliments. Eww, who does that! Well, may be that’s a great deed for them. Not for us on the other side of the screen. The whiners or the trolls and even the hoarders who wish to retain things to just themselves are biggest fall outs.

I wish to go back to days when minds were simpler and there were less chances of crisis. With projects getting complex and demands for acute marketing and online presence, I am here to perform multiple personality rituals for my company as well, intelligently though! No escape, L..

Just a last note for all those who belong to my community, we must understand that social media is a place that demands us to be ourselves to make the most powerful impact. Spreading love, being intelligently peppy, initiating a two way conversation strategy, and socializing can be great tips to avoid being called deviants and create a positive image as desired.
